Friends of Royal Lake recently held its Fall FORL Community Meeting at the end of October. The primary focus of the meeting was to hear the presentation from the Fairfax County Park Authority trails project managers about the five significant projects (new trail from Commonwealth Blvd, Lakepointe entrance upgrade, Richardson drive entrance enhancement and repaving, Rabbit Branch bridge, and shade structure at Lakeside Park) funded, in part, by the American Rescue Plan Act.
The meeting also included a presentation by FCPA Tree Resources on the history of invasives and trees at risk on parkland, a brief overview on how to become an FCPA Tree Rescuer, tips on organizing as a group, and other ways to help trees and the fight against invasive plants.
Those interested in watching the recorded webinar can find it at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/uwQEyHJjJj. The passcode is u^14QyBS
The PDF of the talk, a PDF of tree rescuer information, and a list of the 6-steps to become an FCPA Tree Rescuer Volunteer can be found below. Relevant tools are listed here:
TOOLS
Folding saws
Corona has a nice folding saw with a replaceable blade.
Fiskar does as well, but I have had more trouble finding the replacement blades and I do not like the angle of the handle to blade, but that may just be my preference.
Corona I believe also has a smaller blade folding saw, but I am not familiar with it.
Lee Valley - 7” strait blade, replaceable - https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/garden/garden-care/saws/pruning/75680-quick-cut-folding-saw?item=EC662
Clippers, Loppers,
There are a lot of options - you can pick them up at most general hardware stores.
Small Crowbar/Prybar
Look around and see what you can find. The one that I use is at this link on Amazon.
Scythe - Sickle
Many options out there
Amazon has fairly inexpensive versions
Lee valleyhas a folding sickle with a replaceable blade which I am going to try out. They also have a knife that might work well.
Gloves
- Having gloves with Gauntlets is nice - If you search long rose pruning gloves or rose pruning gloves with gauntlets you will come across some nice ones. My favorite ones are made of goat skin gloves from Fir Tree and are somewhat expensive, but they work really really nicely - https://firtreellc.com
